Eddie Jones has admitted that he ‘probably went a bit too far’ with some of the comments he made about Ireland playmaker Johnny Sexton at this year’s Six Nations.
The England head coach is not afraid to speak his mind to the press, and sometimes says things that are better off left unsaid. In the build-up to the mammoth clash with Ireland, the Australian suggested that people should perhaps be worried about Sexton’s safety on the pitch.
The comments came in light of Sexton’s injury in the France game a couple of weeks prior, a game many feel the French unfairly targeted Sexton in, due to his history. The Irish camp revealed that Sexton has suffered a whiplash injury in the game.
Jones in typical fashion, used this to get the mind games going with Ireland and Sexton.
They’ve talked about him having a whiplash injury. I’m sure his mother and father would be worried about that. Hopefully, the lad’s all right on Saturday to play.
I’d just be worried about his welfare. If you’re saying a guy has got whiplash then he’s had a severe trauma.
Maybe they used the wrong term, but if you’ve had severe trauma then you’ve got to worry about the welfare of the player.
Now in an interview with The Times, Jones said that he now regrets these comments and will, at some point, apologise to Sexton.
I probably went a bit too far there.
At the right time I will [apologise]. I haven’t yet but at the right time I will. Because he is a brilliant player. I love him as a player.
Fair play Eddie. Looking forward to hearing how that one will work out.
