One day…
Sam Burgess has come out to defend former coaches Stuart Lancaster and Andy Farrell over the shambles that was the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
England were infamously knocked out at the group stage as hosts, leading to both Farrell and Lancaster losing their jobs. Burgess himself, a league convert, was used as a scapegoat by most, before returning back to league shortly after.
In a series of tweets this morning, Burgess defended his performances and says it was “individual egos and selfish players” not following their leader [Lancaster] that cost them an early exit.
He goes on to call Lancaster, Farrell and the rest of the coaching staff “great men” and questions the commitment levels of players who seemed to have “their own agendas” back in 2015. Burgess also said “one day” he will reveal all and tell his side of the story.
Considering how successful Lancaster and Farrell have been since leaving England – Burgess’ comments make a lot of sense.
I seem to be getting a few tweets regarding the Rugby WC in 2015….Still. If people actually rewatched the games I participated in You will see I added to the team. What cost us an early exit was individual egos and selfish players not following our leader. Which ….

Essentially cost the coach and other great men their jobs. Tournaments are not won by the coaching staff or one player. It takes a commitment from the full group. I guarantee you this, I was committed but others had their own agendas. I have fond memories of my time in RU

And some great friends. One day I will tell my side of the story but for now I love watching @EnglandRugby and cannot wait to see them as they prepare for the 2019 WC in Japan.
