What was he thinking?
Replacement scrumhalf Nick Phipps was penalised for shoving a medic off the ball in a bizarre twist to the Wallabies’ close 33-21 victory at Twickenham yesterday.
Argentina controlled more than 64 per cent of possession and the chance of an upset loomed large for most of the second half. It wasn’t until an intercept try by forward Dean Mumm with just over three minutes to play that the Pumas were finally silenced..
The Phipps drama erupted with just over 12 minutes to play. With Australia ahead 25-18, he made a move to the ball to grab it at a stoppage in his own quarter.
Remarkably, the Argentinian medic, in full vest and disposable rubber gloves, made a move to pick up the ball first and Phipps gave him a shove to clear him.
Pumas winger Matias Moroni flew in to push Phipps as a heated push-and-shove between the two sides erupted. The end result was Phipps being penalised and three points to the Pumas, who closed to 25-21.
A Bernard Foley penalty goal eased nerves at the 72-minute mark for 28-21 before the late Mumm clincher.
