Under the knife.
Wales second-row Adam Beard has missed the team’s flight to Japan for the World Cup after being admitted to hospital.
Gatland’s men flew out to Japan on Wednesday, but Beard remained in Wales after he was forced to have his appendix removed, leaving Wales with just two fit second-rows on their flight.
But Beard is expected to recover in time to play a part in Wales’ World Cup campaign, with the lock set to fly out at some stage last week once he’s back on his feet.
“Adam Beard was admitted to hospital with suspected appendicitis by Wales team medics ahead of the squad’s departure last Wednesday,” a WRU spokesperson told WalesOnline.
“He had his appendix removed uneventfully later that day and is recovering well. He will rejoin the rest of the squad in Japan early next week.”
Wales take on Georgia in their opening game on September 23 – which will likely come too soon for Beard. Cory Hill is also currently sidelined leaving Gatland with just captain Alun Wyn Jones and Jake Ball to cover the engine room.
