URC side working on blockbuster double swoop for Springbok pair Malcolm Marx & Kwagga Smith

Wanted men.

The Bulls are exploring an ambitious double move to bring Springbok stars Malcolm Marx and Kwagga Smith back to South Africa.

Head coach Johan Ackermann has confirmed that both double World Cup winners feature on the Pretoria side’s recruitment list, although talks remain at an early stage.

Marx and Smith are currently based in Japan, with the former playing for Kubota Spears and Smith having spent the last eight years with Shizuoka Blue Revs, formerly Yamaha Júbilo.

Speculation surrounding a potential return to South Africa for Marx had already emerged, but Ackermann has now revealed that the Bulls are also looking at Smith.

“There are still negotiations going on. Their names are on our table, and we’ll look at them,” Ackermann told reporters.

“But it’s not finished yet, and it’s still a bit of a long way to go.”

Pressed on whether the Bulls were close to getting either move over the line, Ackermann remained cautious.

“Not yay or nay.”

Any deal would represent a significant piece of business for the Bulls, with Marx and Smith both hugely experienced members of Rassie Erasmus’ Springbok squad.

Smith, 33, has played his club rugby in Japan since leaving South Africa in 2018, while Marx joined Kubota Spears following the collapse of his former Japanese side, the Shining Arcs, in 2022.

For now, neither move is close to completion, but Ackermann’s comments confirm the Bulls are actively exploring the possibility of adding both Springbok stars to their squad.
