Ulster look set for another intriguing shake-up in the front row this summer, with a seasoned All Black now firmly on their radar as they prepare for a key departure.
The province are on the hunt for a replacement for Wallaby Angus Bell, who is expected to return to Australia at the end of his short-term stint in Belfast. And according to reports, a major name has emerged as a potential successor.
And according to RugbyPass, former New Zealand international Ofa Tu’ungafasi is understood to be one of the options being considered.
The 33-year-old prop would bring a huge amount of experience, having earned 68 caps for the All Blacks and featured at both the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups.
What makes Tu’ungafasi particularly appealing is his versatility. Across his career, he has operated on both sides of the scrum, capable of slotting in at either tighthead or loosehead when required.
There could also be wider implications for Ireland if the move materialises. Tom O’Toole’s recent switch to loosehead during the Six Nations raised eyebrows, but Andy Farrell has backed him in the role following strong performances.
Bringing in a player like Tu’ungafasi — equally comfortable on both sides — could further shape how Ulster, and potentially Ireland, balance their front-row options heading into the next cycle.
