Lions tour captain Sam Warburton looks set to lose out on a spot in the the team for the first Test against the All Blacks at Eden Park on Saturday. The Welshman has been off the mark on tour so far, while O’Brien has shined in his two starts against the Crusaders and Maori All Blacks.
The Lions boss pretty much has no choice but to go with a back-row of O’Mahony, O’Brien and Faletau and likely will. O’Brien’s return to form has been remarkable, considering how little rugby he has played in recent months.
His display last night was typical of the Tullow native when he’s at his best, with Kiwi journalist Phil Gifford of Stuff. coming up with the best description we’ve ever heard for the Leinster star after the game.
“A flanker so tough and hard-edged he’s basically a roll of barbed wire in boots.”
