The IRFU Have Given Joe Schmidt Permission To Coach The Lions In 2017 On One Condition

Joe Schmidt and Warren Gatland remain the frontrunners to lead the Lions to New Zealand next summer.
This summer’s tests will give the Lions bosses a better idea and who get’s the nod remains to be seen. Whoever does get the role will be expected to relinquish their national duties for the November tour and subsequent Six Nations.
The IRFU have now come out and not only given their blessing, but back Schmidt for the coveted job. Their blessing comes on one condition however, that being Schmidt signs a contract extension to take Ireland to the 2019 World Cup.
IRFU High Performance Director David Nucifora told The Sunday Times:
“If Joe was offered the role that he wanted to do, that would be great.
“And we’d cope. Hopefully his time away from the team isn’t too long but if it had to be, and he wanted to do it, we’d certainly be supportive.”
