Accountability.
There are moments in big wins that sum up far more than the scoreboard ever could.
Ireland’s record victory over England had plenty of headline plays — scores, collisions, passages of slick attack — but one of the loudest reactions inside Twickenham came late on, when Stuart McCloskey tore back the length of the field to chase down Marcus Smith.
It was a sprint that didn’t lead to a try. It didn’t change the result. But it meant everything.
And according to Andy Farrell, it wasn’t accidental.
“Because he didn’t do that on Tuesday [in training] and we highlighted it,” Farrell said afterwards, lifting the lid on what had gone on behind the scenes during the week.
That chase? It had already been discussed.
Ireland’s head coach explained that the standard had been set in camp — and when it dipped, even slightly, it was addressed.
“He did it on Wednesday,” Farrell added.
“You prepare properly, and it stands you.
“Those types of things matter more than scoring tries.”
That is Farrell’s Ireland in a nutshell.
The expectation doesn’t start on matchday. It doesn’t start in the dressing room. It starts on a Tuesday, in a training block, when someone doesn’t quite finish a rep the way they should.
McCloskey’s late-game effort wasn’t about fitness. It wasn’t about optics. It was about accountability.
In a game that was already won, with the clock bleeding red and the result beyond doubt, Ireland still chased. Still folded. Still worked.
That standard — the one set in midweek — showed up when it mattered. It might also explain that smile from McCloskey when he knew he had him…
