Shortly after the trophy World Cup trophy was presented to Richie McCaw at Twickenham, Sonny Bill Williams was pictured performing a presentation of his own.
Williams placed his World Cup winner’s medal around the neck of Charlie Lines (some more pictures of Williams and Charlie here).
In the post-match press conference, the 30-year-old divulged his reason for doing so.
On his lap of honour, the centre noticed young Charlie getting ‘smoked’ by a security guard for running onto the pitch. Williams – with abundantly more empathy than the security guard – felt sorry for the All Blacks fan.
I was walking around doing a lap of honour with the boys and a young fella came running out and he got smoked by the security guard, like full on tackled him. I felt sorry for the little fella.
He would have been eight or seven, I kind of felt sorry for him. It will be a night that he remembers hopefully.
That’ll be just the one World Cup medal in Sonny’s cabinet so.
