Rassie Erasmus issues fresh Siya Kolisi update ahead of All Blacks opener

Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has issued a fresh update on Siya Kolisi’s fitness ahead of Saturday’s huge opening Test against the All Blacks at Ellis Park.

Kolisi has been working his way back after suffering a hamstring injury against Argentina, with his availability one of the major talking points heading into the first Test of the Greatest Rivalry series.

Speaking in Johannesburg on Monday, Erasmus confirmed that Kolisi and prop Ox Nché are the only two Springboks who remain doubtful, although he played down the severity of their respective issues.

“The only two doubtful players, Siya and Ox, I wouldn’t say they’re injured still; I think it’s niggles,” Erasmus said.

“If they get through today [Monday], it probably might be good for us.”

It represents an encouraging update for the Springboks, who will hope to have their captain available as they prepare to renew their rivalry with New Zealand.

Nché, meanwhile, has been recovering from the knee injury he suffered against England, while Erasmus also delivered positive news on Franco Mostert, confirming the experienced forward is “looking good” ahead of the Test.

South Africa have several major selection decisions to make this week, with Erasmus unusually delaying his team announcement until Thursday, just two days before the game.

The Springboks will begin a historic four-Test series against the All Blacks at Ellis Park on Saturday, with Kolisi now facing an important few days as he looks to prove his fitness for the opener.
