Shaun Edwards back in rugby after landing new role

Back at it.

Shaun Edwards has returned to international rugby after joining England’s Red Roses as a coaching consultant.

The former France defence coach will work with John Mitchell’s side on a short-term basis, beginning with Saturday’s Test against New Zealand at Allianz Stadium.

Edwards will remain with the squad for the rest of the WXV Global Series, bringing decades of experience at the highest level of the game.

The 59-year-old previously enjoyed a hugely successful 12-year spell with Wales, helping them win four Six Nations titles, before joining France in 2020.

During his time with Les Bleus, France completed a Grand Slam in 2022 and secured back-to-back Six Nations titles in 2025 and 2026.

Edwards has never previously worked within an international women’s programme but expressed an interest in joining the Red Roses following a conversation with Mitchell.

“Shaun and I have competed against each other in the international coaching arena for a very long time and I am very respectful of what he has delivered,” Mitchell said.

“I’m looking forward to learning and working with him.

“Since his time with France ended, we have had a conversation about our game, and he expressed an interest in working in an international women’s set-up for the first time.

“He has a huge amount of respect for the Red Roses and what we stand for; he sees it as a privilege to join our environment.

“His coaching credentials are exceptional, and his experience at the highest level of the game speaks for itself.”

Edwards will also work alongside Sarah Hunter and the remainder of Mitchell’s coaching team during his time with the squad.

“Defensively, Sarah Hunter is relishing the opportunity to learn from him, alongside the rest of our coaching group, as we head into another exciting Test match against New Zealand,” Mitchell added.

“Shaun will add to the programme and provide incredible value to the girls over the remainder of the WXV Global Series.”
