South African rugby has been rocked by another doping controversy after highly-rated Junior Springbok prop Kai Pratt returned an adverse analytical finding in an anti-doping test.
The 18-year-old Sharks front-rower, regarded as one of the country’s brightest young prospects, has requested that his B-sample be analysed following the initial result. Until that process is complete, no sanction has been imposed, and the disciplinary process remains ongoing.
According to reports in South Africa, the sample is alleged to have contained an anabolic steroid, with Pratt potentially facing a lengthy suspension if the B-sample confirms the original finding.
Anti-doping rules allow for bans of up to four years in cases involving anabolic steroids, although sanctions can vary depending on the circumstances.
The Sharks confirmed they are aware of the matter but stressed they would not comment further while the process continues.
“The Sharks take all matters relating to player welfare, education and compliance with anti-doping regulations extremely seriously.
“We remain committed to providing our players with the necessary guidance and support regarding their responsibilities under anti-doping regulations, while respecting the processes and rights of all parties involved.”
Pratt, who was part of the Junior Springboks setup earlier this year, is already sidelined with a serious foot injury and was not expected to feature again in 2026.
The latest development is another setback for one of South African rugby’s most highly-rated young forwards, whose future now hinges on the outcome of the B-sample analysis and any subsequent disciplinary hearing.
The case also comes just months after Springbok prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye received an 18-month suspension for an anti-doping violation, placing renewed focus on doping in South African rugby.
