La Rochelle head coach Ronan O’Gara has paid an emotional tribute to Uini Atonio, after the prop was forced to retire this week after suffering a heart attack.
The 35-year-old powerhouse — once a colossus in the French front row and a Six Nations Grand Slam winner — is currently in intensive care, stable but battling through recovery after the cardiac event that has now ended his illustrious career.
O’Gara, speaking to the media ahead of France’s Six Nations opener, could barely find the words as he spoke about what Atonio means to him and the whole squad.
“We were all a bit overwhelmed by emotion and the way things unfolded; it was awful,” O’Gara said.
“Since then, I’ve been a bit out of it. I haven’t been very much in control this week because it’s hard to see Uini in a small bed with wires everywhere.”
The Cork native praised Atonio’s influence both on and off the pitch — not just as a dominant prop but as a leader and mentor.
The big fella wasn’t just a rugby player; he was a brother, a role model, and a unifier in the squad environment, especially for those far from home.
“For me, it’s a huge privilege because I know him very well. I know all the things he does behind the scenes. That’s why I love this sport. To meet someone like him. There aren’t many like him in the world. That’s for sure,” O’Gara continued.
“What he does with all the young people, what he does to integrate foreigners with the French, what he does when we’re going through a difficult time, what he does when we think we’re too strong.
“He’s an exceptional person, and I have to thank him for the emotions he’s given me since I’ve been here.
“I’m speechless because he’s truly exceptional.”
