Newcastle Red Bulls have reportedly made a huge move to sign England star Henry Pollock from Premiership rivals Northampton Saints.
According to RugbyPass, Newcastle have tabled a three-year deal for the 21-year-old, which is understood to meet Eddie Hearn’s £1,000,000-a-year valuation of one of English rugby’s brightest young stars.
Pollock is entering the final year of his contract with Northampton and has been permitted to speak to rival clubs since July 1.
Newcastle are now looking to take advantage as they continue their ambitious recruitment drive following the club’s takeover by Red Bull.
The proposed three-year contract is reportedly backloaded, with Pollock’s salary increasing over the course of the deal before he would become Newcastle’s marquee player in 2029.
The England international would also reportedly become part of Red Bull’s wider stable of athlete ambassadors as part of the agreement.
The development comes just a day after Northampton director of rugby Phil Dowson expressed confidence that Pollock wanted to remain at Franklin’s Gardens.
“The appetite is for him to stay. Now we’ve got to find a happy medium. We really want to keep him. He really wants to stay, and that’s a great start,” Dowson said.
“We still have to make decisions based on our budget and our financial situation.
“We’ll continue to do that in the best way possible. That is in discussion with agents, discussions with the group and discussions with the decision-makers about what we can afford and how we put a squad together, how that fits within our budget.”
Northampton’s challenge is finding room within the Premiership’s salary cap to retain one of their biggest assets while maintaining the rest of their squad.
Pollock has already won 13 England caps and is among the 25 England players currently on an enhanced contract worth £150,000 per year.
Newcastle’s reported offer will now seriously test Northampton’s resolve as they attempt to secure Pollock’s long-term future.
