Contract talks.
Peter O’Mahony has revealed the extraordinary details of a conversation with former Munster head coach Graham Rowntree that left him feeling the province had handled his future badly.
In an extract from his new autobiography, All In, serialised in The Irish Independent, O’Mahony recalls returning to Munster after the 2023 Rugby World Cup believing he was capable of playing for another season.
The IRFU had informed him that they could not extend his central contract beyond the end of the 2023/24 campaign because of his age, but were willing to contribute towards a new deal with Munster.
However, when O’Mahony sat down with Rowntree, he was surprised to discover that the head coach believed he intended to retire.
“I thought you were going to come in and tell me you were finishing in July,” Rowntree told him.
As the meeting continued, O’Mahony realised that Rowntree did not believe his body would allow him to continue playing at the required level.
“I didn’t understand how he could think I’d go from playing 80 minutes in a quarter-final of a World Cup to being f**king useless for Munster six months later, but that’s what he was sitting there telling me,” O’Mahony writes.
“He was talking to me as if I’d missed a season and a half, played a few games and was now wandering in hoping Munster would roll the dice again.”
O’Mahony claims Rowntree dismissed the IRFU’s willingness to help fund an extension and told him:
“You’ll thank me for this. Your body’s broken up.”
The former Munster captain challenged that assessment, pointing to his availability record and the condition he was in following the World Cup.
“I’d missed a handful of Munster games since the start of 2016,” he writes.
“I could count on one hand the number of training sessions I’d sat out. And my body was feeling great.”
Rowntree reportedly referenced the stiffness O’Mahony showed when arriving for training early in the week.
“I’m not f**king 20 years old,” O’Mahony replied.
“I get stiff after a game. That’s normal enough, like.”
The Cork man then told Rowntree that he wanted to play for the British and Irish Lions in 2025, an ambition the coach questioned.
“Do you really think you can play for the Lions?” Rowntree asked.
“I’ve just said that to you,” O’Mahony responded.
“It doesn’t seem that f**king far-fetched to me. Faz thinks I can play in the Six Nations and he says he’s going to pick me for the summer tour.”
The most remarkable moment came near the end of the 45-minute meeting. According to O’Mahony, Rowntree threw a pen across his office before saying:
“Go on over and pick the pen up. Show me how stiff you are.”
O’Mahony replied:
“You’re f**king joking me.”
Rowntree immediately insisted it had been a joke, but the incident left a lasting impression on a player who had represented Munster since he was 18.
“I’ve spent my adult life at the club, I said to myself, and this is what it’s come down to now: Wig throwing a pen across the floor for me to fetch like a f**king dog,” O’Mahony adds.
O’Mahony ultimately received another contract and continued playing until his retirement in 2025, making his final Munster appearance against Ulster at Thomond Park.
