Former Munster & Ireland prop Oli Jager lands coaching role after forced retirement

Back involved.

Former Munster and Ireland prop Oli Jager has begun the next chapter of his rugby career after becoming involved in coaching with the province following his forced retirement.

Jager announced his retirement from professional rugby in June on medical grounds after suffering a series of concussions over the previous two years.

The 31-year-old has remained around the Munster set-up, however, and has been pictured at training in recent weeks as he begins exploring a potential career in coaching.

Munster forwards coach Jimmy Duffy has revealed that Jager is already working with players across the squad, sharing his experience in areas including the scrum, contact and lineout.

“He’s got a natural flair for educating and working with people,” Duffy said.

“As much as possible, he’d like to see that grow.

“Oli has got massive experience. He’s got a really good way about him as well. He’s a natural educator. He likes the collaborative approach as well, which suits me.

“He’s got some massive insights, obviously coming from the Southern Hemisphere back to Ireland, and what he’s learned over his career.”

Jager spent seven seasons with the Crusaders in New Zealand before returning to Ireland to join Munster during the 2023/24 season.

The tighthead went on to earn Ireland recognition, making his Test debut against Wales in the 2024 Six Nations, before his career was ultimately cut short by concussion issues.

Duffy believes that experience is already proving valuable as Jager works with both Munster’s younger players and more established members of the squad.

“He’s working around with a lot of the younger fellas and the older boys as well.

“He’s got a really good way about him to help people pick his brains on occasion around the scrum and the contact and the lineouts.

“He is a great resource to have about the place.”
