Joe Marler escaped punishment from the Six Nations for his ‘Gypsy Boy’ slur, but is currently under investigation from World Rugby.
Joe Marler’s hopes of escaping a lengthy ban for calling Samson Lee a ‘gypsy boy’ have suffered a major setback with the emergence of a video appearing to show him telling his opponent to ‘get back to your caravan’.
The England prop is facing a World Rugby disciplinary panel for the incendiary comment during his side’s RBS 6 Nations win over Wales a fortnight ago, after he escaped punishment following a cursory investigation by tournament organisers.
That decision was overturned last week by World Rugby, who called on Marler to explain his remarks to an independent disciplinary panel.
A professional lip-reader who has studied a recording of the first-half incident says the England and Harlequins prop appears to tell Lee: ‘Ey you, gypsy boy! Yeah, get back in your caravan, ey, yes! You! Yes, go on!’
A World Rugby statement read: ‘World Rugby is of the view that the comments amount to misconduct and/or a breach of the code of conduct under World Rugby Regulation 20 and should have been considered by an independent process.
‘In the absence of such a process by Six Nations Rugby, World Rugby is exercising its right to take appropriate action before an independent judicial committee.’
