Munster have added an injection of youth to their halfback ranks, confirming the signing of a New Zealand U20 scrum-half as preparations ramp up for a crucial block of fixtures.
The province have secured highly-rated Kiwi No.9 Ben O’Donovan on an 18-month deal, bringing the former Canterbury academy product into the fold after his standout performances at last year’s World Rugby U20 Championship.
Still only 21, O’Donovan arrives with a reputation for sharp distribution, tempo control and a competitive edge that belies his age — attributes Munster will hope translate quickly to the URC stage.
There was also a timely boost on the training pitch.
Three Ireland squad members — Edwin Edogbo, Tom Farrell and Michael Milne — have all returned to the High Performance Centre after international duty and rejoined full training.
There was further encouragement on the injury front. Jean Kleyn, Calvin Nash, JJ Hanrahan and Alex Kendellen have all stepped up their involvement in training this week, while Tom Ahern’s load is increasing as he edges closer to a return.
John Hodnett, Oli Jager, Conor Bartley, Alex Nankivell and Evan O’Connell remain sidelined, meaning head coach Clayton McMillan must still manage his resources carefully.
