Munster Rugby have made a move for All Blacks tighthead Tyrel Lomax following the 2027 Rugby World Cup as the province looks to strengthen a problem position under Clayton McMillan.
According to The Irish Examiner, the southern province have tabled an official offer for the 48-times capped New Zealand international.
Although the report claims the province faces “stiff competition” for Lomax, with New Zealand Rugby keen to keep the 30-year-old at the Hurricanes.
Veteran prop John Ryan is set to retire at the end of the season, while Michael Ala’alatoa could be preparing for his final appearance at Thomond Park this weekend after arriving on a short-term deal from Clermont last November, although he may be convinced to stay.
There are also serious concerns surrounding the futures of both Oli Jager and Roman Salanoa.
Jager’s latest concussion against Ulster was reportedly part of a “string of head injuries”, with McMillan admitting the former Crusaders prop faces a “career-defining decision” over his future in the game.
Meanwhile, Salanoa is out of contract this summer and has endured almost three years of persistent knee problems. The Irish Examiner report states the 27-year-old recently suffered another setback just as he neared a return to action.
Munster have already confirmed the signing of Connacht tighthead Jack Aungier on a two-year deal, but their reported interest in Lomax underlines the scale of the issue facing the province heading into a crucial rebuild under McMillan.
It also backs up the New Zealander’s recent admission that Munster are actively searching for a “world-class” tighthead to strengthen their front row depth moving forward, with Lomax certainly fitting that mould.
