Munster Rugby legend reportedly offered CEO role following Ian Flanagan departure

Munster legend Keith Wood has reportedly been asked to take over as interim CEO following Ian Flanagan’s decision to step down.

The province confirmed on Thursday that Flanagan will leave his position at the end of October, with an interim replacement to be announced while a permanent successor is recruited.

According to Hugh Farrelly in The Daily Mail, former Munster and Ireland captain Wood has been approached about filling the role on a temporary basis. The report also suggests that former Munster and Ireland head coach Declan Kidney could be brought in to support Wood should he accept.

The potential appointment comes during a turbulent period for Munster, who commissioned an independent governance and organisational review following the fallout from the proposed appointment of Roger Randle as attack coach earlier this year.

Farrelly suggests Wood’s standing within the game could help lift morale and attract potential sponsors as the province looks to move forward.

The Clare native was part of the Munster side that reached the 2000 Heineken Cup final and captained Ireland at the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

His son Tom is also currently part of Munster’s academy, providing another connection between the former hooker and his home province.

Any return would represent a significant new chapter for Wood, although the reported approach has yet to result in a confirmed appointment.
