What an achievement.
Leo Cullen was no doubt a very happy man yesterday evening. The former Leinster lock came under fire after his first season in charge of the eastern province, but the IRFU stuck with him.
Stuart Lancaster was brought in to give him a helping hand, in what proved to be a genius move, and Cullen was afforded some much needed time to rebuild his squad.
The academy flourished and after two semi-final heartbreaks last season, Cullen is now once again a European champion. But what makes his feat even more remarkable is the fact that he created a special piece of history yesterday.
Cullen became the first man to win a European title both as a player and as a coach. Not bad for a man who’s still only 40 years-old. A future Ireland head coach? Don’t bet against it.
Historymaker. @LeinsterRugby's Leo Cullen is the first person to win the competition as both a player and a coach. #ChampionsCup #Bilbao2018 pic.twitter.com/P9jMINkoW1
