Stormers head coach John Dobson has revealed that Siya Kolisi wanted to make an immediate return to action just hours after arriving in Ireland following his release from the Springbok camp.
Kolisi was among the senior players rested by Rassie Erasmus for South Africa’s clash with Australia in Perth following the gruelling four-Test Greatest Rivalry Series against the All Blacks.
Rather than taking the opportunity for some time off, the Springbok captain linked up with the Stormers in Galway ahead of their URC opener against Connacht.
And despite only arriving on Thursday night, Kolisi made it clear to Dobson that he was ready to play.
“Just a big shoutout to Siya Kolisi, who asked to come,” Dobson revealed following the Stormers’ 29-15 victory at The Sportsground.
“He wanted to play tonight despite landing so late last night.
“A guy like that who’s so invested and an amazing example of action speaking louder than words … He comes here, invests so heavily, straps, warms up with the team. Meant a lot to us.”
Kolisi ultimately wasn’t required as the Stormers secured a bonus-point victory to begin their new campaign.
His willingness to play is particularly notable given his recent workload with the Springboks.
The 35-year-old was involved throughout South Africa’s demanding Greatest Rivalry campaign, which saw Erasmus’ side recover from defeat in the opening Test to win three consecutive matches and claim the series 3-1.
Kolisi has since been released from international duty for this weekend, allowing him to immediately turn his attention towards the Stormers following his return to the Cape Town side this season.
While he didn’t make his official comeback in Galway, Kolisi remained heavily involved with the group, strapping and warming up alongside his new teammates.
Dobson believes his actions provided an important example to the rest of the squad as they opened their URC campaign with five points on the road.
The Stormers will now travel to Scotland to face Edinburgh next Friday, potentially presenting Kolisi with another opportunity to make his first appearance since returning to the club.
