Jack Crowley remains hopeful of returning around Christmas or New Year but admits there is still uncertainty surrounding the unusual injury that has kept him out since April.
The Munster and Ireland outhalf has been dealing with a lower-limb vascular issue, previously described by Munster boss Clayton McMillan as a “narrowing of the blood vessel”.
Crowley is not yet running and admits there is no guarantee his recovery will follow the expected timeline. Speaking to The 42, the Irish playmaker admitted he doesn’t know how his body will respond.
“Please God that when it comes to Christmas, I’ll be fully fit,” Crowley said.
“This is my first time in a period where I’ll go through a return to play, and who knows what way my body will respond? That’s just the nature of it.
“So right now, I don’t know, being perfectly honest with you, but in terms of once I’m fully fit and healthy, then it is just fully fit and healthy to go.”
Crowley hasn’t played since Munster’s meeting with Benetton in April and revealed just how debilitating the issue became as he attempted to continue playing.
He was subsequently named to start against both Ulster and the Lions in May before being forced to withdraw.
“I tried to go out to run and kick and I couldn’t,” he said.
There also remains uncertainty over exactly what caused the problem.
“It’s an unknown really with that. That’s something that probably would have helped the diagnosis quicker.
“It could be two things. It could be an accumulation of time and wear and tear, or it could have just been a once-off incident. But I suppose we weren’t aware of either and it just came about.”
The injury has already ruled Crowley out of Ireland’s three Nations Championship Tests in July, and he will also miss the November window.
It came after the 26-year-old had reclaimed Ireland’s starting No.10 jersey in his battle with Sam Prendergast during the Six Nations.
Crowley is continuing his rehabilitation with Munster but has yet to reach the stage where he can resume running as he works towards a potential return around the turn of the year.
