The debate around Ireland’s No.10 jersey has been one of the most talked-about topics in Irish rugby over the past while.
With Leinster’s Sam Prendergast emerging as the ‘next big thing’ and Jack Crowley continuing to battle for the role, every performance, every selection, and every interview seems to be analysed to within an inch of its life.
Crowley, though, appears remarkably calm about the whole thing.
Speaking this week, the Munster out-half was asked to reflect on the ups and downs of his international journey over the past couple of seasons. His answer was thoughtful, measured, and refreshingly grounded.
“I think the journey is one that you don’t ever want to wish you changed anything about because you are here right now as you’re meant to be, and everything along the way is what made you who you are right now,” he said.
For a player who has experienced both the highs of starting for Ireland and the frustration of watching the No.10 debate intensify around him, it was a remarkably philosophical response.
Crowley explained that dwelling on the past — good or bad — simply isn’t part of how he approaches his career.
“You can’t change anything in the past, and it’s done, like the future, don’t know what’s coming, and all you can control is right here, right now,” Crowley added.
“Bring your best right here, right now, and you look after the future because what you do now is what will determine what comes down the line.”
In an era where every selection call is dissected and every young challenger creates a new wave of discussion, it would be easy for a player in Crowley’s position to get caught up in the noise.
But his focus seems much simpler than that.
“It’s never really about focusing too much on the past or looking too far forward,” he said.
“I had a tough training today. I’m thinking about getting back down to the gym to do a gym session, so that’s what’s on my mind, trying to stay as much in the now.”
If anything, it was a brilliant answer — one that shows Crowley is staying firmly grounded while the debate around Ireland’s No.10 jersey continues to swirl around him.
