Joe Schmidt dismissed rumours recently linking him to the English job much to Irish fans satisfaction.
However, at the start of this week, fresh reports emerged from Midi Olympique that the RFU was going to offer Schmidt roughly £1.5 million to try and entice him away from the Irish set-up.
Most Irish fans reckon it was just pure tabloid speculation. However, Shane Horgan has had his say and reckons it’s not the last you’ll hear of this talk.
Horgan was speaking on Second Captains and was quick to highlight that although Schmidt did comprehensively deny any interest in chasing Lancaster’s job, that was said while Lancaster still had his role. This is something that Horgan almost guarantees won’t be the case in the coming weeks.
All of a sudden, there is a vacant position to coach an English team that has the most financial muscle of any international team in the world. It is probably the most sought-after job in rugby, second only to the All Blacks.
Horgan said he would be very disappointed if the New Zealander left but also believes that it would be a smart move for Schmidt. Speaking hypothetically, Horgan said if he was in Schmidt shoes he wouldn’t find it very difficult to jump ship because, in his view, the English have a bones of a very good side and that the move would be hugely profitable for Joe.
