IRFU set to poach Australia’s hottest prospect in “life changing” deal
Wanted man.
The IRFU are reportedly exploring a move for one of Australia’s most highly-rated young forwards, with Queensland Reds tighthead prop Massimo De Lutiis weighing up what’s been described as a “life-changing” offer.
The 22-year-old tighthead is viewed as one of the brightest prospects in Australian rugby, already featuring in national training camps and widely tipped as a future Wallaby. But his long-term future is suddenly uncertain.
According to reports, Ireland are looking to bring De Lutiis into the system with a view to developing him at provincial level, in a move that could eventually see him qualify internationally down the line.
The Sydney-born prop would not be immediately eligible for Ireland as he represented Australia A in late 2024, but the potential pathway is understood to be a key part of discussions. He qualifies for the men in green on his mother’s side.
At 126kg and already making waves in Super Rugby with the Reds, De Lutiis has built a reputation as a powerful scrummager with huge upside — the type of front-row talent unions are increasingly willing to invest in early.
For the IRFU, it would represent a significant statement. From an Australian perspective, there is hope that De Lutiis can still be retained, with Rugby Australia believed to be working hard to keep hold of the rising star.
With a home Rugby World Cup on the horizon in 2027, losing a player of his potential before he’s even broken into the Test side would be a major blow.
For now, the decision rests with the player — and it’s one that could shape the trajectory of his entire career.
