Ireland’s Six Nations permutations following shock Scotland win over France

Super Saturday.

Ireland’s Six Nations title hopes are still alive after Scotland stunned France in a breathtaking Murrayfield clash, setting up a dramatic final weekend of the championship.

Scotland’s 50–40 victory denied France the chance to wrap up the title early and ensured the championship will now be decided on Super Saturday.

Despite the defeat, France remain top of the table on points difference with 15 points, level with Scotland, while Ireland sit just behind on 14 heading into the final round.

For Andy Farrell’s side, the equation is relatively simple — but it requires help from elsewhere.

First and foremost, Ireland must beat Scotland in Dublin in their final match. Without a win, Ireland cannot win the championship.

If Ireland defeat Scotland and France, then lose to England in Paris later in the day, Ireland would move ahead in the standings and lift the championship.

A draw would work for Ireland too, providing France don’t get a four-try bonus point if Ireland fail to get one against Scotland.

If Scotland beat Ireland in Dublin and France lose to England, the Scots will win their first-ever Six Nations championship. Scotland would also lift the championship if they get a bonus-point win over Ireland, and France beat England without one.

There are permutations also when you break it down to score difference, but the fact that France are on +79, and Scotland and Ireland are on +21 and +16 respectively, that’s highly unlikely.
