Uncertain future.
Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi’s future at the Sharks is reportedly in doubt as he awaits the outcome of an internal disciplinary process.
According to Rapport, the double World Cup winner could have his contract terminated if he is found guilty of alleged misconduct during a pre-season team-building trip.
The case reportedly relates to an incident at Bayala Private Safari Lodges, where head coach JP Pietersen outlined expectations around socialising ahead of the squad’s return to full training.
Players were reportedly permitted to socialise on Tuesday evening but instructed to focus on their preparations afterwards.
Mbonambi is alleged to have continued socialising into Wednesday morning despite those instructions.
Rapport reports that his presence at the meeting, and his position as a senior player expected to set an example, are factors in the disciplinary case.
Fellow Springbok Trevor Nyakane was also reportedly involved but could avoid punishment because he was not present when Pietersen set out the rules.
A ruling is reportedly expected within the next two weeks, with Mbonambi’s future at the franchise dependent on the outcome.
No final decision has been announced.
