French star in trouble for nasty eye-gouge on Scotland’s Ewan Ashman

Scotland shocked the rugby world on Saturday when they ended France’s Grand Slam hopes with a stunning 50-40 win over Les Blues at Murrayfield.

The win for Gregor Townsend’s men blew the championship wide open for Super Saturday, with Scotland set to travel to Dublin to take on Ireland, and France set to host England in ‘Le Crunch’

But there was an incident in Saturday’s game that could spell trouble for the French.

Loose forward Oscar Jegou has been caught on camera, seemingly landing an eye-gouge on Scotland prop Ewan Ashman during Saturday’s game. The incident took place in the 59th minute before winger Darcy Graham crossed for his second try.

No action was taken by referee Angus Gardner, nor was it flagged to him by the TMO on the day, with former referee Nigel Owens stating that it should have been looked at.

“It definitely should have been looked at,” Owens said on the BBC’s coverage.

“It doesn’t look good, to be honest.

“Looking at that footage, that player is going to be in a bit of trouble. There will be a process in place now to deal with that, but it should have been looked at it in the game, because it is quite clear what the actions were.

“It was a great game of rugby, and it didn’t really matter in the context of the game, but on another day, in games where the score is tight, things like this are the ones where you really want the TMO to come in, for the clear and obvious. Even if they look at it and then decide.”

Jegou could be in real trouble for the incident and will now attend an independent disciplinary hearing after he was cited for an act of foul play, which will be held on Tuesday, 10 March.
