Fiji International Josh Matavesi Makes Surprise Mid-Season Switch To Premiership Side

On the move.

Fiji international Josh Matavesi has made surprise mid-season move to the Premiership with Bath, his former club Newcastle Falcons have confirmed.

Matavesi retired from international rugby after the World Cup in Japan and has been plying his trade in the Championship with the Falcons after they were relegated from the Premiership at the end of last season.

The 29-year-old made 47 appearances during his time with the Falcons, six of those coming this season.

Director of rugby Dean Richards said:

“Josh has given great service to the Falcons and we thank him for his contribution, as well as wishing him all the best for his time at Bath.

“Moving to the South West will enable Josh and his family to be closer to their roots so they can help take care of his father, and he leaves Newcastle with the thanks and best wishes of everybody at the club.”

Matavesi said:

“I would like to thank Dean and the Falcons as a club for allowing me to take up this opportunity.

”I have really enjoyed my time with the Falcons, everybody has been incredibly welcoming towards us as a family and I’ll take nothing but positive memories from my spell here.”

The move seemingly paves the way for Wales international Jamie Roberts to leave the club with the centre expected to sign for South African side the Stormers in time for the start of the 2020 Super Rugby season.
