Reports linking Andy Farrell with a sensational move to Saracens have been swirling in recent weeks, but the Ireland head coach has now given a measured — yet intriguing — response to the speculation.
Farrell has been at the centre of growing reports suggesting the Premiership giants could target him for a future role, pointing to his strong connections with the club as a reason the rumours refuse to go away.
Saracens have denied that they have held talks, but until Farrell signs a new contract with Ireland, the links won’t be going away.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s game against Wales, Farrell had some interesting things to say about the rumours…
“You’d expect me to say that I’m here to just concentrate on the Six Nations and what will be will be in the future,” Farrell said.
“But I suppose it’s people putting two and two together and making five with the connections, I’m good friends with the owner, and Owen is there, all of that.
“You can see why that has happened.
“I suppose we will sit down and have discussions with the IRFU in the near future, that’s for sure.”
While Farrell didn’t dismiss the speculation outright, he did acknowledge that the links aren’t entirely random.
Saracens owner Nigel Wray has long-standing ties with Farrell, while his son Owen Farrell remains one of the club’s most iconic figures after more than a decade at the heart of their success.
That connection has inevitably fuelled talk that the Ireland coach could one day end up in North London. Still, his comments did hint that conversations about his future are on the horizon.
For now, Ireland fans will hope Farrell’s focus remains, but the prospect of future talks with the IRFU suggests this story may have plenty more chapters to come.
