The Cardiff Blues have this afternoon announced that they plan to drastically cut the size of their squad and stop providing players free of charge to Cardiff RFC and Pontypridd. In doing so, the Blues aim to free up as much as £500,000.
The plan will also see the Blues squad being reduced from its current size of 65 players to between 38 and 40, supported by academy youngsters next season. Cardiff Blues Chief Executive, Richard Holland, told Wales Online they now want ‘less quantity, more quality’.
As a result, Blues coach, Danny Wilson will now be able to attract ‘a higher calibre player’ according to Holland.
Rumours have circulated as to who the Cardiff Blues might now sign, with Toby Faletau and Leigh Halfpenny uppermost in fans thoughts. Indeed Wales Online have also reported that the Blues are confident of bringing Halfpenny back to the club, should he decide to leave Toulon.
The fullback’s contract with the French side is up at the end of the season and according to the welsh website, is ‘a prime candidate for a WRU national dual contract’.
