Had Munster have lost against Ulster this past weekend it would have been the worst losing streak in the history of the province.
Up against an Ulster team in rich form, Foley’s men had it all to do. Somehow, while not the prettiest, with a host of names missing- they did it. Now no one is expecting Munster to transform overnight and go on to become real Champions Cup contenders but the hope is that Munster can reinvigorate their PRO12 chances and perhaps even qualify from their Champions Cup group.
If you had said this last week people would have called you insane but sometimes all it takes is one lucky result to get you back on track. Munster face a Stade Francais team this weekend in Paris that dare we say it- are having a worse season than the Southern Province.
Stade have suffered seven defeats in their opening eleven games. The most shocking of which came against the likes of Oyonnax, Agen and Brive. As a result, last season’s champions now find themselves four points clear of the relegation zone.
If Munster can somehow come away with a win in Paris, they’ve got the French giants at home the following week once again in the Champions Cup followed by an away trip to Zebre and a home game against Ospreys in the PRO12. Munster may not win any trophies this season, but they have a huge opportunity to perhaps restore some pride and more importantly- some confidence back to the famous red jersey.
Munster have a massive opportunity this weekend to lay the foundations for many years to come… Let’s hope they bring the right tools.
