UK Anti-Doping have revealed that the player made a ‘blatant attempt to cheat the system’ using anabolic steroids and will be suspended until 2019.
A second player from the same Welsh rugby club has been banned for doping in the space of two days, it has emerged.
Maesteg Harlequins’ Ryan Watkins has been suspended from all sport for four years after testing positive for an anabolic steroid in what has been described as a ‘blatant attempt to cheat the system’.
Watkins provided a sample at the same time as his former team mate Shaun Cleary , following a pre-season friendly against Bridgend Ravens on August 18 last year.
Cleary has received a two-year ban after a positive test for cocaine and expressed his devastation in an email written to UK Anti-Doping (UKAD).
