Needless.
Andy Goode has sparked a fresh social media row after taking an unnecessary swipe at popular rugby content creator Squidge Rugby following Bordeaux’s Champions Cup semi-final clash on Sunday.
The former England out-half was responding to a post from Squidge, who had criticised the tone of recent punditry around refereeing decisions.
“Commentary on this game is basically Miles Harrison getting really excited about how great the game is then Goode & Dallaglio tediously complaining about innocuous refereeing decisions and it pretty neatly sums up what rugby discourse & discussion has become the last few years,” Squidge wrote.
It was a fairly measured take on the modern broadcast landscape — but Goode didn’t hold back in his reply.
“Some of us have played the game and some of us haven’t, imagine being a Bath fan seeing the lack of replays and for blatant yellow cards,” Andy Goode posted.
“My job is to say what I see, your job is to sit in your Mum’s basement and watch.”
The comment has drawn plenty of reaction, with many pointing out the unnecessary personal dig in what was otherwise a discussion about analysis styles and refereeing focus.
It’s not the first time debate around rugby coverage has veered into this territory, with fans increasingly split between traditional punditry and the newer wave of independent analysts offering tactical breakdowns and alternative perspectives.
Goode, never one to shy away from speaking his mind, will feel he’s simply defending his role. But the tone of the response may have overshadowed the point he was trying to make.
And, as ever, it’s the discourse around the game — not the game itself — that ends up taking centre stage.
