Ireland head coach Andy Farrell silenced his critics yesterday as his side shocked the rugby world with a record win over England in the Six Nations.
Farrell has faced his first real test since becoming head coach in recent weeks, with fans and the media turning on him and his side – and he has passed it with flying colours.
The former Rugby League captain is contracted with Ireland until the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, but has avoided questions about his future beyond that for now.
And according to Midi Olympique, he could be set for a sensational return to Saracens, a club he previously played for and coached, and a club that still has his son Owen on the books.
Farrell was brought to Rugby Union by Saracens, going on to represent England following the switch, and things are lining up for the Ireland head coach to slot right back in. The timings couldn’t be more perfect.
Mark McCall is set to step down as Director of Rugby at the end of the season, after a trophy-laden 15-year spell with the club, with former Sarries DOR Brendan Venter stepping back into the hot seat.
Venter is clearly just a stopgap before a permanent successor is made, and that could line up nicely for Farrell, who could take over after bringing Ireland to the World Cup.
The report adds that Owen Farrell could be set to join the coaching set-up once his contract is up at the end of next season, making a return all the more enticing for Andy.
No doubt this is one to keep an eye on. If Farrell leaves in 2027, who should Ireland look to? Ronan O’Gara? Mark McCall? It’s an interesting one.
