Andy Farrell has admitted a conversation over his future with the IRFU is not far away, with the Ireland boss opening up on what comes next after another Six Nations campaign in charge.
Farrell has become one of the defining figures of this Ireland era, but with the usual speculation beginning to swirl around his long-term plans, he revealed that formal talks are now on the horizon.
“I will have a conversation. We’ve already spoken about having a conversation. That won’t be too far away, so we’ll see how that goes,” Farrell said.
It was hardly a definitive commitment one way or the other, but it was enough to confirm that movement is coming soon behind the scenes. And while Farrell stopped short of laying out exactly what he wants, he made no secret of how much the role still means to him.
“You know that I love this job. There are all sorts of stuff that needs to be talked about. I’ve no doubt.”
That line alone will be enough to reassure plenty of Irish supporters, even if it also leaves the door open to a broader discussion about what the next few years might look like.
Farrell also offered an amusing glimpse into what life on the other side of the rope might look like, with an opportunity to enjoy Irish Rugby as a fan clearly appealing to him from a very different angle.
“Nobody wants to give those days away. I’d like to watch it, though, at the same time, sometimes,” he added.
“Walking down from the Shelbourne and doing a bit of a pub crawl thing sounds nice to me! But no . . . they are special days.”
It was a classic Farrell answer: warm, honest, and just vague enough to keep people guessing.
For now, Ireland’s head coach is still exactly where he has been for the last few years — at the centre of it all. But with talks now approaching, the question of how long that remains the case is about to become a lot more real.
