Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has made an interesting revelation regarding Bundee Aki and his unceremonious dropping from the Ireland squad ahead of the Six Nations.
Aki was dropped by Ireland ahead of his disciplinary hearing for verbal abuse of a match official in Connacht’s defeat to Leinster last month, with the centre ultimately banned for three games, ruling him out of the opening rounds of the Six Nations.
But it appears it was not Andy Farrell’s decision to make an example out of Aki and drop him from the squad.
The Ireland head coach said that he “was privy” to what went on behind the scenes, but “wasn’t being told what was happening”, and opened the door for a return for Aki.
“I spoke to Bundee, and he’s certainly sorry for what happened,” Farrell said.
“He’s apologised to the right people, he’ll be working hard at home. If needed, he’ll certainly be available for us down the track.
“It was a big blow for any team, not just by his talent as a player, but his presence, his experience and all of that.
“I was privy to what was going on behind the scenes, but I wasn’t being told what was happening, and I didn’t know what was happening as far as the URC, or the hearing, so I was told along the way what needed to happen.”
Let’s hope we see Aki in an Ireland jersey again soon.
