Surprised.

All Blacks winger Leroy Carter has broken his silence on his controversial altercation with Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe in Cape Town.

The pair clashed during the closing stages of South Africa’s 33-26 victory over New Zealand on Saturday, with footage of the incident subsequently going viral on social media.

Carter dragged Kolbe along the ground and then pulled him to his feet after the Springbok had been taken into touch.

Kolbe reacted angrily once back on his feet, appearing to make contact with Carter with his left hand before a brief shoving match developed.

The incident went unpunished during the game but subsequently attracted plenty of attention, with some supporters calling for Kolbe to face retrospective action.

Carter has now addressed the altercation himself and appears considerably less concerned about it.

“I was surprised, hey,” Carter said on the All Blacks’ Inside the Black Jersey podcast.

“I didn’t realise he was going to get so angry, but no, it was actually probably the first time I’ve had a bigger reach than someone when I’m putting my hand up. I actually had a bigger reach, which is quite cool.”

Former All Blacks scrum-half Brad Weber, who co-hosts the podcast, jokingly complimented Carter on his technique during the scuffle.

Carter was later asked whether he ever worries about taking things too far when getting involved with significantly bigger players.

“It’s usually when you’re on your own. If you don’t have your big fellas coming in, that’s when you start getting a little bit worried, but once they’ve got you back, they’ll keep going,” he said.

Kolbe ultimately escaped punishment during the game and went on to be named Player of the Match after contributing 18 points from the kicking tee as South Africa levelled the four-Test series at 1-1.

The Springbok star has since been handed a rare switch to fullback for Saturday’s third Test at FNB Stadium following Damian Willemse’s injury.

Kolbe and Carter could therefore find themselves crossing paths again in Soweto as the rivalry resumes this weekend.
