The All Blacks have received an encouraging Damian McKenzie update ahead of Saturday’s opening Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park.
McKenzie has been battling an ankle injury suffered during New Zealand’s 54-0 victory over the Sharks in Durban, with head coach Dave Rennie admitting over the weekend that there was some doubt over his availability for the series opener.
However, the 31-year-old returned to training on Tuesday and successfully completed the work required of him, raising hopes that he could be available for selection.
“He was sharp today. He got through what he needed to get through. So, he’s trending well for a big one this weekend. So, that’s all we can ask,” All Blacks assistant coach Tana Umaga said.
“Our medical staff has done a really good job, as well as our S&C, to make sure that they’re taking every precaution they can, but making sure that he puts his best foot forward to be available for the team.”
Umaga was also asked directly whether McKenzie had been ruled out of Saturday’s Test and responded emphatically: “No.”
The latest update represents a significant improvement after Rennie admitted following the Bulls game that New Zealand were “less confident” about McKenzie than fellow injury concerns Will Jordan and Cam Roigard.
Jordan and Roigard are both expected to be available provided they come through a full week of training, while McKenzie will continue to be monitored ahead of the team announcement.
Richie Mo’unga will not be considered for the opening Test following his recent recall, with Rennie instead planning to give him game time against the Lions on August 25.
