Airlink has addressed safety concerns after an incredibly low-flying display before Saturday’s Springboks victory over the All Blacks went viral.
Two Airlink aircraft performed a dramatic formation flyover above DHL Stadium ahead of the second Test between South Africa and New Zealand in Cape Town.
Footage of the moment quickly spread across social media, with the television angle showing the aircraft appearing frighteningly close to the stadium roof as they passed over the packed venue.
The spectacle prompted plenty of reaction online, with questions raised over just how low the aircraft were flying.
Airlink has now responded to those concerns and insisted that no safety regulations were breached during the display.
According to SABC News, the airline said the flyover required careful planning and rehearsal and was conducted under the guidance of the South African Civil Aviation Authority and Air Traffic Services.
Airlink also said flight data from the aircraft confirmed that the flyover took place within the altitude and speed limits that had been approved and rehearsed beforehand.
The airline is the official domestic airline partner of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry and is responsible for transporting the Springboks and All Blacks between their matches in South Africa.
Airlink had previously performed another formation flyover before the opening Test between the teams at Ellis Park, using specially liveried Embraer aircraft representing the colours of South Africa and New Zealand.
Saturday’s Cape Town version proved particularly spectacular, however, with the perspective from inside DHL Stadium making for some incredible footage.
The Springboks went on to defeat the All Blacks 33-26 in another dramatic encounter, levelling the four-Test series at 1-1.
The two sides meet again next Saturday at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg before the series concludes in Baltimore in the United States.
