Major plans in store.
No matter what way you look at it, the PRO12 is set for a major shake-up over the next 24 months or so. Two South African franchises look likely to come in as early as next season, with more additions expected in the coming seasons.
It’s part of an initiative from PRO12 executives to build up the league and increase revenue so they can compete with the big boys in the English Premiership and Top 14. By bringing in the Cheetahs and Southern Kings, TV revenue is expected to double.
The plan is to continue reaching out to new markets, with Iain Morrison of the Scotsman reporting that a franchise based in the US capital of Washington will also join the PRO12 as early as 2018.
The competition is likely to be further expanded in the near future with the addition of a team from Washington DC…
The South African duo look likely to be joined by one USA franchise based in Washington DC but not until the season after next, 2018-19.
