Connacht’s search for a new head coach with a new contender emerging.

Pat Lam is set to leave his Connacht legacy behind at the end of the season to take over Premiership strugglers Bristol. The former Samoa captain last month said he couldn’t turn down the offer that was on the table, given the nature of the coaching industry.

A number of names have been linked with the post in recent weeks from Irishmen in the form of Bernard Jackman and Ronan O’Gara, to two Kiwi’s who have recently ruled themselves out of contention.

It’s now emerged that another Kiwi is in contention for the job, and he’s a familiar face. According to Galway-based journalist John Fallon, current Fiji head coach John McKee is now on Connacht’s radar.

McKee was an assistant coach to Michael Bradley with Connacht between 2002 and 2005. He also worked with the IRFU’s head of performance David Nucifora back in Japan. The only problem is he is contracted with Fiji until the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, so whether or not a deal could be struck remains to be seen.
