Right before anyone says it, we are aware the game is on in Twickenham and Amhrán na bhFiann won’t be played, but that’s not our point.
Rewind to 2007. Ireland took on England in Croke Park in a historic game that saw the gates of Croke Park opened to England as rule 42 was revoked. From the respectful observance of God Save The Queen and the amazing rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann, to the record number of points conceded by an English side in 124 years of championship rugby, the 24th of February 2007 was a day to make modern Ireland proud.
Ireland head into this weekend’s game very much the underdogs. Ireland will need to leave it all on the pitch if they are to have any chance of defeating Eddie Jone’s new-look England. The disappointments against both Wales and France need to be put behind them and it’s time to put the talk of a ‘crisis’ in Irish rugby to bed.
Schmidt may be heading into the game with a massively depleted squad, but it’s time for the young guns to stand-up and be recognised. No Irishman should need any motivation when playing against the old enemy, but if they need any extra- here’s a video that will help.
