Does Munster’s Silence Indicate Anthony Foley Will Be Gone At The End Of The Season?

Anthony Foley’s tenure at Munster has been under constant scrutiny since he took over at the start of last season.

Munster have been knocked out of the Champions Cup two seasons running and another home loss last week against Ospreys sees them outside the play-offs and outside a Champions Cup qualification spot for next season.

Many have called for Foley and his backroom team to resign at the end of the season but Munster CEO Gareth Fitzgerald insisted that Foley has an option to renew his contract for one more season. Interestingly back at the start of January, Fitzgerald insisted that Foley had until before the Six Nations to make his decision, if he hadn’t exercised his option by then Fitzgerald said that the province will then ‘review the situation’.

Fitzgerald insisted that Munster want avoid the situation in which Leinster found themselves in last year after sacking Matt O’Connor.

The point (that Leinster left it too late) is very valid, there’s a very limited number of top-class coaches available at any time around the world.

One would imagine if Foley had exercised his option there would have been a press release before the Six Nations but we have since heard nothing on the matter. Mick O’Driscoll, Brian Walsh, Jerry Flannery and Ian Costello are all also out of contract at the end of the season.
