Paul O’Connell is beloved by the people of not only his native Limerick, but indeed the whole island. The former Munster and Ireland lock was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from University of Limerick and even has a statue erected of him at Shannon Airport.
O’Connell is a national treasure. Over 70,000 people rose to their feet to clap as O’Connell was stretchered off the field of the Millennium Stadium, during Ireland’s Rugby World Cup tie with France. It was the last time he ever played for Ireland. The crowd in Cardiff knew it, and it was an emotional moment.
In a survey ran by IrishJobs.ie, Paul O’Connell was named as the people’s choice to succeed Michael D Higgins as president of Ireland. You’ve got our vote Paul.
