Fall from grace.
Saracens once again made headlines yesterday as the fallout from their salary cap breaches continues with the reigning Premiership champions set to accept defeat and be relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
The club was handed a 35-point deduction and a fine in excess of £5 million earlier in the season after a long investigation found that they had gone over the salary cap in each of the last three seasons.
And it appears they will once again be over the salary cap come the end of this season with the club unable to cut wages in excess of £2 million to ensure they are compliant.
They are now set to accept another 35-point deduction which will relegate them to the Championship and leave the three-time European champions in absolute tatters.
A number of their top internationals will likely be forced to leave for financial reasons (although there is no salary cap in the Championship) and the fact that they will want to be in the shop window at an elite level ahead of the 2021 Lions tour of South Africa.
But it appears England captain Owen Farrell will not be one of them. The talented outhalf is their most high-profile player and is on a massive salary of around £750,000-a-season.
The club called a meeting yesterday morning to break to news to the players about their impending relegation and according to SunSport, Farrell addressed the players at the end to let them know he was going nowhere.
What the future holds for the likes of Maro Itoje, the Vunipola brothers, Elliot Daly and Jamie George though remains to be seen.
