Joe Schmidt named his squad yesterday for their tour of USA & Japan this summer.
The likes of Jamie Heaslip, Sean Cronin, Rob Kearney and Donnacha Ryan were all left out, with Schmidt deciding to back his young guns. The eight uncapped players are John Cooney, Dave Heffernan, Rory O’Loughlin, Andrew Porter, James Ryan, Rory Scannell, Jacob Stockdale and Kieran Treadwell.
The inclusion of Leinster’s James Ryan came as a huge surprise. Ryan captained Ireland to the World Rugby Under-20 Championship final last summer but has yet to play a game for Leinster. It seems however, Schmidt will add another lock to his squad.
In the squad reveal, Ireland said that additional player will be added to the squad following the weekend’s provincial fixtures, that man we think will be Ultan Dillane, who is back in training after an injury lay-off. With only three locks named, and Dillane perhaps in line for a comeback against Northampton, we could yet see him named in the Ireland squad this summer.
