Bundee Aki’s future is far from certain.
The talented centre was a hot commodity a few months back with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. Rumours were rife about a possible move to Irish rivals Munster, with a number of French and English clubs also said to have made big money offers.
In the end however, Aki bought into the Connacht revolution, or perhaps the Lam revolution it now seems. The Kiwi was lured to the west by Lam originally, turning down both Leinster and Munster.
This was a time when Connacht were nothing more than whipping boys and long before Lam made his mark on the province, leading them to PRO12 glory. Aki originally signing with the province was seen as a massive statement of intent, and proved to be just that.
The good news then came a few months back when Connacht announced that both Aki and Ultan Dillane has signed new long-term deals with the province. They had managed to retain his services despite interest and the centre began discussions with Joe Schmidt about the possibility of playing for Ireland in October of this year when he becomes eligible.
In the last few weeks however, things have changed drastically. Pat Lam will leave Connacht at the end of the season and Bundee Aki for one, is not happy. The centre was the first person to tweet his displeasure at the announcement with his now famous “Feeling pissed” post.
His latest comments, to freelance reporter John Fallon, have now made matters even worse.
“I literally do not know what I want to do at the end of the season, or who I want to play for.
First off, I need to make sure that Connacht do well.”
It looks like Aki will give his all until the end of the season when he recovers from his current injury setback, but beyond that… Who knows.
